Potato Blight Control - How to Use
- If growing potatoes it is important to apply at first warnings of blight
- Listen out for blight warnings on the TV or radio
- Blight is most common in damp, humid conditions
- Blight is a fungus that is carried by wind
- Blight can occur any time in the Summer but July to August are often the worst months
- To apply:
- Dilute in water 4ml in 1 litre of water
- Max application of 4 times per year
- Apply in dry conditions only
- Do not apply if rain is expected in the next hour
- Apply before blight has taken hold
- Apply a small covering to both the top side & underside of the leaves
Potato Blight Control - Other Ways to Avoid Blight
- Plant early potatoes as these are often harvested before the onset of the 'blight season'
- Grow disease resistant varieties such as Sarpo Mira or Setanta
- Be sure to remove all potatoes from the ground at the end of the harvest
- Never leave old potatoes lying around as these can harbour infection
- Remember to rotate your potato crops over a four year cycle
- Avoid watering the foliage in 'blight season' as this can wash the fungus down to soil & tubers
- Copper sulphate is a traditional method but regulations have restricted the sale of copper sulphate mixes such as Bordeaux mixture
