Guelder Rose - Characteristics
- A Native of Ireland
- Mature size: 2.5m tall & 3m wide, with a tall arching habit
- Deciduous shrub, they loose their leaves in Winter
- Foliage - Palmate leaf shape, green in Summer turning red & maroon in Autumn
- Moderate to fast growth rate
- Flower - The 'snowballs' are a distinctive feature of this plant
- The flower appears in May to July
- Fruits - Red berries appear from September onwards
- A hardy plant which is able for cold Winters & hard frosts
Guelder Rose - Uses
- Can be grown to form an informal hedge
- The guelder rose has something for every season of the year
- Delicate white flowers in Summer
- Deep maroon / red foliage in Autumn
- 1cm, shiny red fruit in Autumn / Winter
- Guelder rose is great for attracting wild life & birds
- Suitable for planting in shaded locations & damp soils
- Not suited to acidic soil
Guelder Rose - Planting Instructions
Sowing Time
- All bare root shrubs are planted from October to March
- Avoid frosty conditions, where the ground is frozen
Trench Preparation
- Prepare hole / trench approx. 2ft wide & 2ft deep
- Add farm yard manure to base of the trench / hole
- Lightly cover the manure with a layer of soil
Positioning Plants
- For hedging, space plants 30-90cm apart
- Stagger planting positions for a denser hedge
- When planting - hold plants at ground level & back fill the top soil
- Ensure each plant is straight & soil is compacted in around it's root ball
- Level off the soil around the plants
Handling the Plants
- Be sure to water both before & after planting
- When plants arrive, plant them straight away
- If you are unable to plant straight away - then 'heel them in' temporarily
- Keep plant's roots in their bag & avoid exposure to sun light
- Take care not to damage roots, bark & buds
After Care
- Water bare roots plants regularly until plants establish
- Water before & after planting
- If dry weather persists, water every 2 days
- Weeding is also essential - especially bind weed which can quickly smoother a young hedge
- A new hedge will need to be weeded at least 3 time over the growing season
- Weed in March, June & September
- We recommend using weed membrane & mulch to control weeds
Pruning
- A good fruit display is dependent on good flowering the previous Spring
- To ensure good flowering:
- Cut back old growth after flowering
- Flowers appear on 2nd season's growth

- The Viburnum family of plants is a very large family with other common garden plants including
- V. tinus, V. plicatum, V. davidii & V. botanadensis
- Birds love their fruits, but they are slightly poisonous to humans
- If eaten, you can get an upset stomach
- These plants attract a range of insects & are home to 17 different species
- Viburnum Opulus in the national symbol of Ukraine
- Their berries have been used to make both dye & alcohol
