Bare Root Hornbeam - Characteristics

  • Frost resistant
  • Semi evergreen
  • Shade tolerant
  • Grown as hedge
    • Similar to beech hedging
    • Formal, neat hedge
  • Grown as tree
    • Fast growing, tall, upright tree with straight main stem
    • Tree becomes more rounded when it matures
  • Unable to retain foliage in Winter when it matures

Bare Root Hornbeam - Uses

  • Grow plants together for a formal hedgerow
  • Fast growing hedge for privacy
  • Tolerates wet soil better than beech
  • Can be grown on it's own to form a single specimen tree
  • Sometimes trees are planted along driveways / avenues
  • Trees grown for their uniform & upright main trunk

Bare Root Hornbeam - Planting Instructions

Sowing Time

  • Plant Bare root plants in the dormant season - October to March
  • Avoid frosty conditions

Trench Preparation

  • Dig trench approx. 2ft wide & 1.5ft deep
  • Add approx 4" of farm yard manure to base of trench
  • Cover the manure with fine layer of soil
  • This prevents the manure 'burning' the plant's roots

Positioning Plants

  • Space plants 30cm apart
  • Stagger / alternate plants to create a double row
  • This creates a wider & thicker hedge
  • Back fill the top soil
  • Be sure that the base of each plant is just below soil surface
  • Compact soil in well with your foot
  • Level off the soil around the plants

Handling the Plants

  • Watering is essential - Both before & after planting
  • When plants arrive, plant them straight away
  • If you are unable to plant straight away - then 'heel them in' temporarily
  • Keep plant's roots in their bag & avoid exposure to sunlight
  • Take care not to damage roots, bark & buds

After Care

  • Watering must be done regularly until plants establish
  • Water after planting
  • If dry weather persists water every 2 days
  • Weeding is also essential
  • A new hedge will need to be weeded at least 3 time over the growing season
  • Weed in March, June & September
  • We recommend using weed membrane & mulch to control weeds

Pruning

  • Trim back once every year in late Summer
  • If pruned in late Summer, plant will retain foliage over Winter

Hornbeam - Quick Facts

  • Hornbeam is used in place of beech hedging in very wet soils
  • Hornbeam produces catkins from May to June
  • The foliage of hornbeams is oval in shape & serrated
    • Meaning it looks similar to the common beech
  • But in fact the hornbeam is related to the birch
  • Hornbeams are also great for 'pleaching'
I bought and set my Hornbeam hedge in 2018. For the first two years the hedge established slowly as would be expected. As of 2024 I have a hedge which I have maintained at 1.5-2m which provides great privacy and shade. Out of 75 plants I only lost one (which I attribute to soil conditions). I also bought the porous hose from the garden shop which made watering very easy. I set my hedge in a staggered pattern which makes the hedge that bit thicker I think.
Planted out 150 of these last week. Mid March and they are all budding and bursting into life in there new home. Very happy with the quality and price.

Recieved my bare root Hornbeams today. Very well packed and excellent root structure. Even threw in a few more for good measure!! Thank you.
Great service. Plants are excellent and are good height. First time using Garden Shop but will do so again.
Many thanks to John at the garden shop for literally ensuring I received my order from door to door. The quality of the trees and hedging is always amazing and at a price I return to year after year and will do so into the future. Unlike other online gardening shops, John was on email with advice and answers to all my small questions. thank you. Helen
Very quick delivery, excellent quality and the plants were quite big
good sized plant, looks healthy
