How to Chit Potatoes
Why Chit Potatoes?
- We chit potatoes to encourage faster sprouting of the seed potato
- This will give us crops quicker as it allows us to start the growing process indoors before the middle of March
How to Chit Potatoes
- Take your seed potatoes
- If they are quite large you can cut the seed potato in half
- Next take an egg carton or similar & place the seed potatoes into the egg carton
- When positioning ensure that an 'eye' or indent on the seed potato is facing upwards
Where to position
- Place the egg carton with seed potatoes in a bright & cool location
- Leave there & do not move or disturb for about 4 weeks
- The shoots should have reached 3 to 5cm in height
- The shoots should be green in colour
Next
- At this stage the seed potatoes are ready for planting out
- Don't plant out seed potatoes before the middle of March
- Leave until later if the weather is not suitable
