- Sow thinly
- Sowing Depth: 1cm deep
- Soak soil before sowing
- After sowing, lightly cover basil seeds with soil
- Germination after 2 weeks
How to Transplant
- Pinch out seedlings 6 weeks after germination into 9cm pots
- Transplant again once seedlings are 12 – 15cm tall (or if they reach a height & stop growing)
- Transplant into 1L pots or larger
- Position pots in a sunny position, best grown indoors or in greenhouse
- Transplanting will increase the soil's nutrients & growing conditions
Crop Maintenance
- Basil requires similar growing conditions to tomatoes - warmth & sunlight, fertile soil & moisture
- Keep plants indoors - can move outdoors during the day in warm weather
- Keep moist at all times
- Aphids can be a problem indoors
- Wash off with soapy water on a regular basis until all signs of pest have gone
- A fly catcher will also help to control aphids
- Basil will not tolerate frost
How to Harvest
- Wait until plants are large enough and have a number of leaves
- Pick off the oldest leaves to harvest
- Allow time between harvests so plant can recover
