Sowing Instructions
- Sowing Time: Early spring
- Sowing location: Direct in soil or 9cm pots
- Sow seeds thinnly into pots
- Soak soil before sowing seeds
- Lightly cover seeds with potting compost
- Germination after 2 to 3 weeks
How to Transplant
- Once seedlings are large enough to handle (10cm tall)
- Transplant out into the garden
- Generally 6 to 8 weeks after germination
- Harden off before transplanting to outdoors location
- Note: Chives are perennials
- Position where they will grow for many years
- Space 60cm apart
- Prefers a sunny location with space to spread
- Soil: Well drained, sandy soil - Moderate fertility is fine
Crop Maintenance
- Keep moist & weed free
- Chives need full sunshine
- Prune off flowering heads to prevent seeding & encourage leaf growth
- Plant in & around your vegetable garden to repel pests
- Can repel the carrot fly
- Clumps will need to be divided every 3 years
How to Harvest
- This is a perennial plant & will live for many years
- They can be harvested each year
- Remove stalks from the base
- Remove the outer & older stalks
- Best to harvest before flowering
- Do not remove more than 1/3 of the plant at a time
