Sowing Instructions
- Sowing Time: Winter squash are tender vegetables so grow under cover
- Note: Butternut squash is a Winter squash
- Squash require similar growing conditions to pumpkins
- Sow in mid Spring, ensure frost has passed
- Sow in 3 seeds per 9cm pot
- Thin later to one seed per pot
- Requires min 15 degrees to germinate - start seedlings on a heated propagator
- Once germinated, keep underc over & ensure seedlings are in a bright, frost free location
- Sowing Depth: Sow seeds on their sides at a depth of 3cm
- Using potting compost, soak compost & then sow seeds
How to Transplant
- Harden off & water well before transplanting
- Water again after transplanting
- Space plants 1m to 1.2m apart
- Position a solid support frame around seedlings
- Cover seedlings with cloche until early Summer
- Water well
- Location: Fertile soil, full sun with shelter from winds
Crop Maintenance
- Squash require regular water & feeding when growing
- Feed regularly, mulch around base of plants to keep moist
- Train shoots to grow around support frame
- Place a water bottle into the soil close to plant's roots for ease of watering
- Protect seedlings from slugs
How to Harvest
- Harvest from Late August onwards
- Fruits need to ripen on the plant before harvesting
- Wait until fruits have turned yellow before harvesting
