Rosa 'Abbaye de Cluny' - Planting Instructions

Sowing Time

  • These roses should be planted the moment they arrive
  • Planting season for bare root roses is October to March
  • Avoid planting in frosty conditions

Hole Preparation

  • Prepare a good size planting hole. 1½ x 1½ ft
  • Loosen the soil in the hole & mix in well rotted manure
  • Also add a small handful of fertiliser pellets

Handling the Plants

  • Take care not to damage plant's roots
  • Keep covered until time of planting
  • Do not expose the roots to light or allow to dry out
  • Ensure roots are always protected from frost prior to planting
  • Water plants before & after planting
  • Feed plants over the Summer months, using a fertiliser high in potassium
  • Apply rose clear to foliage to prevent mildew, rust & greenfly aphids

Pruning Roses

  • Roses need to be pruned back each year
  • They will grow fast & develop several flowering stems each year
  • In early Spring, once worst frost has past, prune your roses
  • Cut out all dead, dying & diseased branches
  • Remove any crossing over or rubbing stems
  • Prune back remaining stems to approx. 30cm above ground level

  • Hybrid teas are a modern group of roses
  • Created by crossing teas & perpetual roses
  • Known for their large blooms
  • Generally hybrid teas have sparse foliage & pointed flower buds
