Spindle Tree - Characteristics

• Small tree often with multiple stems from the base
• Foliage: Long, narrow ovate leaves
• Inconspicuous green in Summer but they come alive in Autumn
• Plants take on a fiery red colour from September to Winter
• Flower: Small yellow flowers from May to June
• Fruit: Resemble flowers themselves, Spindle produces red berries with orange seeds in Autumn
• Mature size: 4m tall & 2.5m wide
  • If allowed to grow to full maturity
• Deciduous tree, they lose their leaves in Winter
• Growth rate: Average
• Very hardy tree

Spindle Tree - Uses

• Grown for it's Autumn colour
• Suited to small, medium & large gardens
• Best when positioned at back of flower beds
• Or place along margins of woodland areas
• Grow as an informal hedgerow
• Suitable for nature gardens & wildlife gardens
• Can be found in native hedgerows

Spindle Tree - Planting Instructions

Planting Time

• Best practice would be to plant these plants as soon as arrive
• Bare root trees can only be planted during the dormant season (September to April)
• Avoid frosty conditions, where the ground is frozen
• These spindle saplings are 3ft tall & will require several years to mature

Positioning Trees

• Position in sun or partial shade
• Soil: Well drained or moist
• Likes most pH & happy in sandy & clay soils
• Most commonly found in alkaline soils
• Spacing distance varies on use
• For hedging, space 30cm apart
• If planting in lawns, then space 3 to 5m apart
• When planting, hold plants at ground level & back fill the top soil
• Ensure each plant is straight & soil is compacted in around it's root ball
• Level off the soil around the plants
• Support with bamboo cane for first 2 years
• Replace cane with larger stake when required

After Care

• Water bare root plants regularly until plants establish
• Water before & after planting
• If dry weather persists, water every 2 days
• Weeding is also essential, especially bind weed which can quickly smoother a young tree
• Keep grass growth away from the base of trees to ensure a faster growth rate
• Avoid strimming around the base of trees
• Requires training to form the spindle into a tree
• Choose a main shoot & cut back all other shoots to ground level
• Main shoot will require staking
• The Spindle tree is known to attract the blackfly pest
• Treat with pesticide to control this
